ATD GTC Fall Event – Learning in Plain Sight: From on-the-job to in-the-job Learning

August 15, 2025 by Trew Landis

October 1, 2025

8:30 AM – 11:30 AM – In-Person @ Brookview Golf Course and Lawn Bowling

ANNOUNCING OUR FIRST ANNUAL TALENT DEVELOPMENT SUMMIT!

This milestone event showcases the power of our community and is where thought leaders and L&D professionals at every level come together to connect, learn, and grow.

This summit is your chance to experience why our chapter is the region’s leading community for L&D professionals. Don’t miss the networking event of the season and the opportunity to see firsthand the energy, talent, and ideas that make our chapter the place to be.

Which is why our program zeroes in on one of the biggest questions facing learning and talent development right now.

This Summit features Julie Winkle Giulioni, one of Inc. Magazine’s Top 100 speakers and a champion for workplace growth and development.

In a world where time is the ultimate non-renewable resource – and attention is a close second – the traditional model of learning and development is coming under increasing pressure. How can we help busy professionals elevate their skills, build capacity, and future-proof their careers when they have no discretionary time to spare? How can we do it for ourselves? The answer doesn’t lie in adding more to already overflowing plates; instead, we must shift our perspective and leverage the learning opportunities that are hidden in plain sight, right within the work.

Distinct from ‘on-the-job learning’ which tends to introduce developmental activities and overlay growth-driving experiences upon an employee’s role, ‘in-the-job learning’ is a strategy that reveals the rich and often untapped educational value of the tasks and challenges employees are already engaged in. Each project deadline, each customer interaction, and every problem solved is chock-full of moments that can catalyze growth and development.

This session, based upon her recent TD Magazine article and work with clients, introduces attendees to the mindset shift from ‘on-the-job’ learning to ‘in-the-job learning’, gives examples of how ‘in-the-job learning’ works, offers hands-on practice with some simple tools including Chat GPT, and provides participants with the opportunity to design impactful ‘in-the-job learning’ experiences for your own organization.

Key takeaways: By the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Coach those in their organizations to leverage intentional in-the-job learning strategies for meaningful development
  2. Generate tangible and cost-effective strategies for squeezing greater development from any activity
  3. Elevate the outcomes of existing learning solutions by including in-the- job development cueing
  4. Incorporate and leverage AI as an ‘in-the-job’ development partner to build accountability, awareness, and results.

Our Presenter:

Julie Winkle Giulioni is a champion for workplace growth and development and helps executives and leaders optimize talent and potential within their organizations. One of Inc. Magazine’s Top 100 speakers, she’s the co-author of the international bestseller, Help Them Grow or Watch Them Go, translated into seven languages and in its third edition. She’s also the author of Promotions Are SO Yesterday: Redefine Career Development. Help Employees Thrive, which has been recognized with Nautilus and Axiom Business Book Awards.

ATD Book Banter Community of Practice – Do Nothing: How to Break Away from Overworking, Overdoing, and Underliving

April 12, 2025 by Trew Landis

November 20, 2025

11:30 AM – 1:00 PM – Virtual

*You do NOT need to read the book to attend. You, your ideas, and your experiences are enough.

What if working harder isn’t the answer? In Do Nothing: How to Break Away from Overworking, Overdoing, and Underliving, award-winning journalist Celeste Headlee challenges the toxic hustle mindset that dominates modern workplaces. Drawing on history, social science, and personal stories, she shows how our obsession with busyness leaves us burned out, disconnected, and less effective in the very roles we value most. Instead, she makes a compelling case for reclaiming rest, joy, and human connection as essential to thriving—not just surviving—at work and in life.

As professionals in Talent Development, this conversation hits close to home. We know the pressure to deliver results, drive performance, and model productivity for others. But what if our greatest impact comes not from doing more, but from doing less with greater intention? Join us for this month’s ATD Book Banter to explore Headlee’s provocative ideas and discuss how “doing nothing” might unlock healthier teams, stronger engagement, and more meaningful growth.

This program is FREE for all ATD-GTC members. Members may bring one complimentary, registered guest.
